Frenectomies, Tongue-Ties, Lip-Ties, & Tethered Oral Tissue Treatments

As a pediatric dental specialist, Dr. Bret Lesavoy offers expanded services that are uniquely designed for children. If your child has a tight or functionally restrictive frenulum/frenum—which is the thin strip of tissue just under the tongue and behind the lip—it can interfere with breastfeeding, airway and speech development, and their facial profile.

With advanced training in soft tissue laser therapy, Dr. Lesavoy frequently partners with pediatricians, lactation consultants, oral and myofunctional therapists, speech pathologists, pediatric chiropractors and other specialists to offer conservative laser tissue treatments like frenectomies for infants, children, and teens who would benefit.

It is important to note that everybody has some frenum attachment and not all frenum attachments require and/or will benefit from frenectomy treatment. Dr. Bret works closely and collaboratively with patients, families, and a team of specialists to comprehensively and conservatively identify and help to support and manage each patient’s individual needs.

What is a Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure that involves the release of the lingual (tongue) or labial (lip) frenum/frenulum. If these tissues are too tight, it can limit the range of motion needed for latching, sucking, eating, or speaking. A tight lingual frenum (tongue-tie) can even lead to structural and functional variations in the craniofacial complex, which can influence a child’s airway and ability to breathe and/or sleep as they should. A frenectomy eases the tissue by thinning or trimming away a small amount for better lip and tongue mobility.

Thanks to soft tissue laser technology, our pediatric tethered tissue treatments provide increased comfort and results that are further enhanced in collaboration with our larger team of specialists. Laser technology also reduces inflammation and bleeding for minimal downtime and a faster recovery.

Why Consider a Frenectomy for Your Child?

Frenectomies are typically recommended when a tight or short frenulum causes problems that impact your child's oral function and comfort. Some common reasons to consider a frenectomy include the following:

  • Feeding Difficulties: In infants, a restrictive lingual frenulum (often referred to as tongue-tie) and/or labial frenum (often referred to as a lip-tie) can interfere with breastfeeding or bottle-feeding. A frenectomy may help improve the latch and suction required for effective feeding, making nursing more comfortable for baby and mother alike.
  • Airway Development: An overly tight lingual frenulum can prevent the tongue from resting in it’s natural position behind the maxillary anterior teeth. If a lingual frenulum results in a child’s tongue being tied to the floor of the mouth, this could potentially impair the maxilla’s (top jaw’s) ability to naturally expand, which could lead to a narrower maxillary arch, crowding of teeth, misalignment of the jaws, and/or an impaired airway.
  • Tooth Alignment and Lip Placement: An overly tight labial frenulum can cause spacing or gaps between the front teeth, potentially leading to orthodontic issues down the road. It may also interfere with your child’s lips closing together completely, increasing the risk of dry mouth, gingivitis, and tooth decay.
The Frenectomy Procedure: What to Expect

Prior to performing a frenectomy, Dr. Lesavoy will conduct a thorough examination of your child's mouth to determine whether the procedure is necessary. If a frenectomy is recommended, you can trust that our team will explain the procedure in detail, answer any questions you may have, and address any concerns.

During the procedure itself, Dr. Lesavoy will carefully and precisely release the restrictive frenulum using a state-of-the-art soft tissue laser. The procedure is typically quick and relatively painless, and most children experience minimal discomfort. Our compassionate team will ensure your child's well-being throughout the process, making sure they are at ease.

To ensure the best possible outcome for your child we thoroughly review detailed post-operative home-care instructions and recommendations and are committed to following up with you and your child to guarantee we do everything we can to support proper healing and optimal results for you and your child.
